Russian Internet Campaigns
This site, which has a large following and receives a large number of unique monthly visitors, has been successful in spreading false information and pro-Russian propaganda to military personnel and their families. Russian actors have also been known to create fake social media accounts to gather intelligence and spread propaganda, and Russian military hackers have targeted Defense Department employees with phishing attacks and have posted stolen military data online.
The Russian government has a long history of using online campaigns to spread disinformation and propaganda, particularly during times of war. Du, Russian forces targeted Ukrainian soldiers with demoralizing messages in order to sow dissent and demotivate troops. Pro-Russian propaganda was spread through these various channels, including Veterans Today.
False Narratives
Some of the false narratives that have been spread through Veterans Today during the war with Ukraine include "Kiev's Forces Shelled a Detention Center in Donbass because 'the Nazi began to Testify on War Crimes," "Zelensky's Conscription Now Targeting Nursing Homes," and "The Risks of US Military Assistance to Ukraine. Disturbing Alert by NATO's Media Partner Defense One." These headlines were designed to influence public opinion and create a pro-Russian sentiment, particularly among the military community.

Protect Yourself from Disinformation
Given the continued increase in Russia's online propaganda efforts, it is important for individuals to be cautious when consuming news online and to fact-check before sharing information. It is crucial to be vigilant against the spread of false information and to look out for signs of propaganda. The spread of fake news only serves to undermine democracy and the rule of law, and it is up to all of us to resist these efforts.
